Did it work as expected on first installation before any modifications ?
Does it work as expected if you boot from a Live Image ?

After booting in live usb i checked and no sound, the system started with analog audio chosen as default again (front connecters are not even plugged in).
when i tried to play sound the analog bar moves as if the sound is being played but when i selected HDMI the bar remains totaly dead. system is not even trying to produce sound through HDMI. what could cause this?

I am unable to edit my post so reposting this comment. My monitor has 2 HDMI and one Display port, i noticed in volume control that My HDMI connection is shown as HDMI/Display Port (connected). My motherboard does not have a DP and i am only using HDMI Cable.

This is very odd.  I obviously don't have the same hardware, but have a system with an HDMI port that had never been connected.
Cabled the computer to the HDMI port on a TV and was able to get sound and display working on the TV as expected with just a few clicks.

Can you list what you do to select HDMI ?

I just go to audio mixer and select hdmi from there, also in vlc media player audio device select hdmi output or headphone if they are plugged in. it remains selected in subsequent restarts.  on an unrelated note, the software updater is prompting that 4 important updates are avilable but when i click on it it stops in the middle with message "software update has been canceled"

Updates aren't designed to work when booted from Live media.

Don't know - sorry.
If I have an active audio application on the Playback tab set at 0dB and an active Port on the Output Device tab also set at 0dB, the levels match and sound is produced.
Any if either the Playback or Output tabs level settings are changed, the system behaves exactly as expected.

I did not mean from live usb, the update in general are getting terminated in the middle. there are 4 updates that do not get installed something called noble and ppa.
As for the sound problem, i am going to download older versions of LL and install them on a old laptop HDD i have for rainy days like these.
please do not close this thread as i will post update.

For the updates - start a new thread in the updates section.  Make sure to post the actual log messages.

This thread can remain open as long as you are prepared to keep going on it.  In practice, very few threads get closed.
Maybe someone else will be able to offer suggestions.

There will not be a need for a new thread as i seem to have solved the problem, i downloaded the older version of LL starting with LL 6.6.
I created the bootable using 6.6 and booted in live system, the system selected analog audio by default again but then i played a media file on vlc and selected hdmi from vlc sound device and lobehold, the sound was there. now i need to know how i can install LL 6.6 over my linux partition without destroying windows. any help would be much appriciated.

Best to start a new thread in the Installing Linux Lite section for your new requirement.

Provide information about how your disk is currently set up and how it boots currently.
If I understand correctly you have a dual boot Windows and LL7 set up.
If so, boot the LL7 installation and run these commands.
Code:
lsblk
Code:
sudo fdisk -l
Enter your password if asked.

Post the results in your new thread along with the information suggested above and describe explicitly what you want to do.
