Cannot Install updates - not connected to internet error

Hi,
I'm a complete Linux noob so please be patient with me.

I've installed Linux Lite on my Acer VN7-792G, complete install no dual boot with Windows. Initially I encountered the "Reset System" boot loop which i've managed to resolve via using Secure boot mode to point to the Grub.efi. It took a while to boot but I got there in the end but I'll want to fix that going forward - any help on that would be appreciated as well as I read it was recommended to have Secure boot disabled but the issue at hand I need help with is that I can't Install updates.

When click on "Install Updates" from the Menu, nothing happens for a while then I get a dialogue saying " Your computer is not connected to the internet, Linux Lite cannot check for updates. Please check your internet connection and try again."
My computer is connected to the internet and I am able to view webpages in the browser and download things but update is not working. I've also tried plugging into my router via an ethernet cable and still the same issue.
The odd thing is that I had the same issue with my previous Windows installation on Windows 11. Was able to access internet and download but could not download Windows updates.

Can anyone please help me shed some light on this issue?

The 'Your Computer is not connected' error should be almost instant, so a significant delay implies something is odd. Approx how long is the delay for you ?

When your system is up and running on the internet (but not updating) please can you open a terminal by pressing 'Ctrl', 'Alt' and 'T' keys together.

In the terminal window run the following commands and post back.

Thanks for your response. After I clicked Install Updates, the dialogue box takes just under 2 minutes to appear. I'm not sure if you wanted specific pieces of info so I just copied everything shown. My system is also taking a very long time to boot - some 5 minutes. I don't think it should be that slow with my processor and RAM. Do you think it could be related to my update issue?

Not a lot happened. It stayed on the white cursor for a while then the prompt changed to "linux ~ 56"

The last command (curl) replicates what the update script checks before proceeding.  It should get a near instant response but looks like it is timing out (or giving error 56) for you despite you having a working connection.  Try the adding the verbose option to the command to see if it gives any more information on why this is happening.

I'm assuming you are on a straight forward home network - let us know if that's not the case.
I wouldn't have thought this is related to previous Windows 11 not updating - but I don't really know.
5 minute boot time - seems long for that spec machine, could possibly be related, but I think we need to sort the updates first.

Yes, I have a standard home network setup. Single router with devices connected via wifi or Ethernet.

Your curl checking address 142.250.187.206:80 gets a connection reset rather than the expected response from the server.  The outcome is that the update script aborts as if there's no internet connection.  I'm on a different service provider in the UK and the check works as expected for me.

Long shot, but do you have anything like ad blocking, privacy filtering or other smart/security/safety protection with your router ?

Maybe need to wait to see if anyone else has any ideas.

No i've not set any ad blocking, firewall or filtering. It's a completely fresh install of Linux Lite 6.2.

I'm a complete loss as to what could be happening but it does seem more than a coincidence that when I had Windows 11 installed, I was having the same issue so i'm thinking it could be more than software related. I've tried flashing the bios with the latest updates from Acer but no joy.

What is strange is that I am still able to access the internet, it's just the OS updates for Linux and Windows which don't connect. Also strange that app installers are slow. I have a feeling all of that is related.

The long shot was that there may be some filtering on the router or ISP.  In your position, I'd be tempted to try another connection just to try to eliminate that.  If you have a cooperative friend/relative/neighbour who uses a different ISP you could quickly see if the updates work on their set up.

Couple things to look at / try..
Internet works, just not "update" sites.. and slow boots ...

Both could be related...


Check date/time - if more than 5 minutes out of sync you could being denied....


Disable IPv6 - from network GUI


Check/Try a different DNS server (make note of prior) May need to be tried on router


Set a static IP address




Check whats slowing... 3 different commands

I've switched back to Windows 11 and it appears the issue with updates and slow performance has been resolved by recreating and formatting all HD partitions. Never experienced an issue like this before but at least it's now sorted. May try Linux again in the future as I liked what I saw but for now I'm just happy having a functioning laptop again.
