Can't boot to usb drive
#1

Need a bit of help.

I've been trying to get my laptop to boot to Linux 4.0 on a 4GB HP USB drive. I've changed the boot order (or at least I've tried to) to show the USB as number 1 position in the Boot section of the BIOS but the machine doesn't want to know and keeps booting up in Windows.

I don't know if it's relevant but my laptop is an Asus Vivobook 14_E406SAS.  Originally it was running Windows Home 10 S but I changed it back to the regular Windows 10.

I can't see where I'm going wrong but would be grateful for any advice.

[member=421]pelouk[/member]  I have a Vivobook if like mine; it has UEFI bios..

In the BIOS turn off secureboot (it most likely is keeping it from booting to USB )
I'm assuming you downloaded the typical downloaded for the 4.x series - you can use this but BIOS will need to be set to Legacy OR download the UEFI 4.2 installer and not worry about the BIOS/UEFI conflicts...

Also - make sure you've created the USB with a preferred method...

Create USB:

UEFI

OR as I mention use the UEFI version - it will install to both BIOS or UEFI - dont mind "test" its the same LL and will upgrade to LL4.8 fine...

Many thanks for that.

I've downloaded Etcher but can't seem to get it to work so I've gone for the UEFI download. However I don't know what to do with that from there.

Once you have the ISO downloaded, use etcher to create the bootable usb..

Are you creating from Windows or another Linux?

Typically, open etcher, select image (iso) - then the target the USB, you may need to reformat from the previous....
Once selected - flash it.

Then boot from it

I was working in Windows.  For some reason I couldn't get Etcher to work properly so I burned the iso using Rufus. I'll try booting from that and let you know how it goes.
