I would like to install linux lite on a laptop of a friend. I downloaded the last 32bit version of linux mint. With the program xfburn in Kubuntu 16.04, I have burnt a disk image. I used as DVD disk DVD-RW of TX Tink Xtra 4xspeed. But apparently this laptop won't start from DVD. It always starts Windows 7.
The data of this computer is according to BIOS:
Notebook Model: HP Pavilion dv 1000
System Board ID 09B8
Processor Type: Intel® Pentium ® M CPU
Bios Version: F.20
Processor Speed 1.8 GHz
System Memory: 992 MB
As boot order, there is:
ATAPI CD-ROM Drive
+Hard Drive
Network Adaptor
! Floppy Diskette Drive
What can I still try to start this laptop from DVD? I won't yet use a usb stick.
P.S. I live in Belgium and I'm speaking Dutch.

I had to use an ethernet cable plugged into the laptop and connected to my router to do the install.
Once you have Linux Lite installed and drivers are installed, you shouldn't need to use the ethernet cable to connect again.
We only get one shot at this thing called life, let's make the best of it.

The specs for HP Pavilion dv 1000 indicate a DVD-RW/CD-RW not CD-ROM. Has someone changed the drive? A CD-ROM drive will not read a DVD, it has to be a CD/DVD-ROM.
I had the same problem with a refurbished laptop which was advertised as having a CD/DVD-RW but in fact had just a CD-ROM. Fortunately the vendor replaced the drive.

Hello Jorisvh,
"Compact Disc Rewritable" is a cd reader/writer/re-writer, it will only read dvd if it is a combo drive, dvd-rom/cdread/write.
Other you need one that says dvd on its outside.

OK from the picture you do have a CD/DVD-RW so I think it is a BIOS problem.
See if
https://askubuntu.com/questions/353803/u...-dvd-drive will help.
Also google 'mounting DVDs'.

Hi,
A few things.
- Your drive is a DVD reader and writer, but was it the one use to write the disc? (i.e. are you sure the drive itself is functionnal).
- When booting if you have a press F8 for boot menu or something, try and use that then choose the wanted drive. Could be F12 or F11 or F10, etc. also.
- You used a DVD-RW media, can you use a regular DVD-R? just in case the RW does weird things.
Cheers!
