If Abiword and Gnumeric meet your needs, that is good, because they require fewer resources. Some recommend FreeOffice, but it doesn't work on the newer .docx and .xlsx files.

As for the menu entry, the menu editor can be used to 'turn off' the offending entries so that they no longer appear. As for removing them entirely, that is somewhat more complex, because they reside in more than one location...
