Install Brother HL-L2480DW printer - MarRic - 12-27-2024

I would be grateful for some help getting my new Brother HL-L2480DW printer installed (by USB) working on my computer (Linux Lite 5.4). I've followed the instructions to download driver and install on the Brother website (multiple times),every time it looks like it is set up, but the printer ALWAYS says idle and doesn't print. The printer functions because I can print a test page from the printer menu. I want to be able to print & scan (copy works fine). Why isn't there a USB option in the printer settings?

Without having the same or similar printer, it is difficult to provide specific help.

Have you tried the suggestions from the Brother FAQ "The driver installation finished successfully but I cannot print. (Linux)"

Thank you for your response stevef. Yes, I'd seen those instructions and tried again, but none of those instructions match up with the options on my printer. I suspect the instructions didn't get changed when they converted to a touch screen display? I've been through every option within the printers menus, but I don't think it's the printer, it prints fine if I do a test page from the printer itself, and it copies ok, too. But no matter the attempts I've made at printing from Linux Lite the printer properties always says "idle" and doesn't print. I don't understand all the options presented for setting up the printer in LL, which doesn't help, but...I've tried them all, LOL. I am at a loss why there is an option for Serial Port which is "older" than USB?

Question, would it help if I install the latest version of Linux Lite? Ie: are there more options in the System/Printers menu in later versions?

USB connected printers should be detected by the hardware.
If it is detected, the Printers utility should 'discover' it without the need to 'Add'.

Can you connect your printer to your system and power it up.  Wait a minute and then run this command.
Code:
lsusb
To show all connected USB devices.  You should be able to identify your printer in the list.
Let us know if the printer is listed and what appears in the Printers utility.

If your printer is very recent, some features/functionality may not yet have been included in Linux, but basic printing and scanning may be possible.

stevef, I was needing to get the printer functioning because I had something I needed to print before we left to go south for the winter, we left today (small town, but the library was able to print for me from my flash drive). I will review the new information you provided when we return in the spring. Thanks again!
