What media player do LL2-users use for downloading & playing podcasts? - m654321 - 09-26-2014

As far as I'm aware I can't usethe VLC media player (that comes with the LL2 software bundle) for downloading & playing radio podcasts (or can I?).

I did some experimentation and found 'Clementine 123', which is v.popular, not to work very well with LL2 - the preset sound setting is too low.

What media player do forum members recommend for LL2? Any suggestions for LL2?

Regards
Mike

When you say podcasts what type of file you mean?

VLC can do the trick I suppose.

Hello m654321,

I don't think I have ever used a podcast, or the thing named rss, so am unsure about them.
Media players I use in LL2 are -
1/ QMPlay2 for video and internet radio streams.
2/ VLC Player for mp3.

The podcasts I mean, are files I can download of past Radio 4 broadcasts, that are available on the BBC i-player website.

Hi m654321,

Here's a link to the BBC Podcasts & Downloads page
http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/bh
You can search for specific podcasts and download the ones you want.

Sorry Scott you've misunderstood the question (see 1st post) - maybe I presented it unclearly...

Here goes.

My question was meant to be what is the preferred software that LL2-users have to download & play podcasts
on LL2, e.g. podcasts of radio 4, or other radio programmes, downloaded from BBC i-player.

E.g. Banshee, Clementine, Rhythmbox, to name some.

Mike

Don't know what I was thinking. Guess I need another espresso. Let me try again.

If I want to listen to a podcast online I click the (podcast) link in the browser and and it will play in my browser, Firefox. So my preferred software here is the browser.

If I want to listen to a podcast offline I save the podcast and use VLC to listen to it later. So my preferred software here is VLC.

I'm sure they're more elaborate solutions out there but I just don't personally need them. Hopefully others will jump in and offer their preferrences as well.

Does that answer the question?

m654321,

Don't know if I have anything valuable to add to this -- just an observation.

Took look at link Scott(0) referenced before and noticed that the file types for download are in mp3 format.  If you are having problems getting VLC to play those files, my guess is that you did not install all necessary codecs when you installed LL2 because normally VLC has absolutely no problem with those.  You can add missing codecs by going to Menu -> System -> Install Additional Software -> Restricted Extras (install those).

@gold_finger
Excellent point, appreciate the info.

I don't listen to podcasts but do download radio programmes (Radio 3 Live in Concert) using get_iplayer.  For playback on my PC I use VLC media player.

VLC supports a wide range of formats so should be able to play podcast downloads.  (EDIT: Also see gold_finger's suggestion above)

It also has an option to subscribe to podcasts.  Click the "Toggle playlist" button then select Internet > Podcasts and click on the "+" sign.  A pop-up dialog will appear asking you to "Enter URL of the podcast to subscribe to".
