Linux Lite Updates recommender - Coastie - 09-25-2014

When running Linux Lite Updates, who is the recommender to do updates or not?

If it is someone from the Linux Lite Team, I feel perfectly comfortable to install or not as recommended. If the recommendation is from Ubuntu, I am not so sure. I screwed up once by not know who the recommender was by not taking the default recommendation and would not like to do that again.

Hi Coastie,

The recommeded method to update Linux Lite is

Menu > All > Install Updates

Does this answer your question?

Scott

I think Coasties question was whether the updates come from a reliable source (i.e. the Linux Lite "team").

Coastie --- I think the updates come from various sources, depending on the program/app.  I assume they're all legitimate/good but I'm new to Linux so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I understand how to do the updates. As Monkeyman said, I am asking who is making the recommendation when it gets to yes or no do you want to do the updates?

Hi Coastie,

Yes, you want to do the updates

Quote:Who is making the recommendation
I suppose the answer is Valtam by way of the repositories he chose to include in Linux LIte.

I received one update offer and the default answer was no but was confused so enter Y. Fixed problem it causes with help of this forum.

My guess too is that it is Valtam but would appreciate it if he would confirm it.

Re: Linux Lite Updates recommender - rokytnji - 09-27-2014

I think Coastie might be talking about accepting the package maintainers file version vs the original that comes with the distro. Like during a ugrade.

I never sweat this decision because your original version is save as "filename.dpkg-old and can be restored to "filename" while the new one that does not work can be renamed to filename.newbutbrokeme. Then reboot. So  always say yes.

If I am wrong. Oh well. Won't be the 1st time.

When you are asked whether to keep the local version (N) or the maintainer's (Y), chose the local version.

Valtam and the rest of the devs have modified the configuration specifically for Linux Lite for a reason, so it is best to keep their changes.

I think above was the mistake I made.

Above what I want to do.

I'm confused ... I'm in the middle of installing updates after reinstalling Linuxlite because I could no longer connect using the wireless card ... I hardwired an Ethernet cable and am back on the internet but now I want to install updates ... how do I know if I have the latest version?  Can someone help me get my wireless card to work again (my computer is an old gateway brought back to life with Linux ... was windows xp).  thanking you in advance
