Lite Core - Suggestions welcomed - Valtam - 05-22-2021

I am seriously considering doing this. Stripped down version of Lite where the user gets to choose:

Web browser
Email client
Firewall
Office Suite
Partitioner
PDF viewer
Media player
Photo editor
Photo manager
Scan software
Back up software
etc

Base files and drivers will stay intact as per usual - to ensure wide hardware compatibility.
Start up and shutdown as you could imagine are ridiculously quick.

Should I do this? Main Linux Lite release will remain unchanged.

Will live mode be available too? I like it, I don't know the rest, but I think it is a good idea :045:. It gives users more freedom of choice when it comes to the software they want to install and use in their OS.  Two suggestions only: add whisker menu, and disable lite update to auto-start at boot. Yes, nothing changes other than software that's missing from Menu compared to standard LL. Lite Update has already been removed (see tray in above gif) Whisker Menu adds a lot of ram and the whole idea of 'core' is to remove anything that is NOT required and simplify everything else to it's 'core'

Just label it "for more experienced users" or something like that. I would choose Geary over Thunderbird, Brave over Firefox, perhaps Abiword instead of LibreOffice, etc. Maybe Lite Core" would be awesome!

There should be at least 5 -6 choices for each category.

Ah, yes, now I see(don't see it)that. By the way, having a second look at that gif, I noticed in the terminal "7 Gib out of 20 used, 38% of disk space". That looks like a bit too much for a core edition, or is there more stuff in besides the OS? Stuff like music, documents ...

Didn't think about that, you're right.

It's my standard VM config, I don't really pay attention to the specs, other than making sure I never run out of resources. Better to over-cater at a wedding than to under-cater.

Lite Core:  Yes please - optional addons Lite optimised and in "Lite Software" menu.  The more the merrier so the "uninitiated" ( such as myself) can mix and match as needed.  Lean and Mean starter.

A thought....

"I installed Lite Core - How do I make it LL Full???" or "Have core now want full".....

I know core is LL less the add-ons...
Could "Lite Software" include those added packages/features? Or a "Lite Core Converter" to add the options??
Else, is the answer to install the full version....

Just thinking, depending how difficult that could be....
Or maybe a tag "Core version for those familiar with Linux and prefer to customize their own"....

*For the Windows refugees who might not understand the differences??

I do like the idea of a Core Smile Kudos [member=2]Jerry[/member]

Lite Core sounds great and would be something I'd like to see.
