All the photos disappeared instanly by themselves.... - Rapidrob - 10-06-2020

I put Linux Lite 4.8 on my friends desktop computer and all went well.
He's been using the computer with no errors for four days now. He went to his Photos folder where I had placed several thousand of his photos of all types and the folder is  now empty. Not one photo was present. I had him go to the recycle bin and it too was empty.
He says he did not delete any photos but did up load more photos from a thumb drive. They uploaded with no issues.
I had him check to see if somehow the photos file was sent to the thumb-drive,they had not.
Any ideas as to what has happened to his photos or where they went?

It migth worth checking with some tool like photorec and see if it can find them.  Install the tool with
Code:
sudo apt-get install testdisk
once installed, launch the app by opening a terminal and type
Code:
photorec
and follow instructions from here https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Step_By_Step

Hope this helps! Smile

https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/scalpel
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/focal/man1/scalpel.1.html

If the files are recoverable scalpel will find them and it is the easiest to use on a Linux OS. However it sounds like you may have uploaded them with a file extension not recognized by Linux.

Is / Are .jpg and .png not recognized?

Sorry for the delayed reply. My systems have been down for the last two days. Yes .png and .jpg are fine. The file extension I was referring to was for the folder the images were in. If you just uploaded from a non-linux application folder by selecting the folder and not the individual images it is possible that the upload could succeed and yet you would not be able to view the images because they can only be opened with the application the folder applies to and linux could not find the application. In some cases file search would not be able to locate the images either. In any case if the upload was successful the files are there on the drive somewhere. Perhaps you only have permission as a specific user. There are several possible ways to get into your situation. Scalpel will find the files if they are there, or you could try a file search from root.
