Installed legacy instead of uefi mode - penglix - 09-08-2020

Hello,
my laptop is running Windows 10. I installed Linux Lite. The installation went through smoothly and successful. However, afterwards I wasn't able to boot Linux Lite. I can still boot Windows 10 though. I believe I made the mistake of installing legacy instead of uefi which I have. What shall I do now? Can I just run the uefi installation and will it automatically write itself over the legacy installation?

Any help for this new Linux Lite user is highly appreciated.

Hi,

Do you see an OS selector screen or does it boot straight into Windows?
Also, what is the computer model?

If the laptop/Windows is set up in UEFI mode - did you disable UEFI/Secure Boot use Legacy mode?
If so - Legacy mode need to be enabled to use LL and to use Windows flip on UEFI....

If you didn't change UEFI settings - you most likely installed in UEFI mode.

You may want to check for an OS selector as mentioned - it can also be set in the BIOS, look in the UEFI configurations - you will be able to choose Windows or Ubuntu(LL)

[member=5414]firenice03[/member]: I disabled fastboot and secure boot and enabled CSM. Unfortunately, I can only find "boot Windows" as an option in the Bios.

I saw this at the beginning when I installed it. Does that mean I installed the legacy version?

I should have seen this instead in the beginning to install the UEFI version. Right?

Coming back to my original post:  What shall I do now? Can I just run the uefi installation and will it automatically write itself over the legacy installation?

If you set UEFI enabled, you can reinstall. I wouldn't try to just add the uefi boot portion, but do a reinstall. You'll be prompted what disk to use and can format.

There are so many partitions now. How do I know which one to delete? Does anyone know a good "How to page" or program to delete it?

Sorry - I should of specified the process to reuse/format the existing, but no harm.
You can delete/choose the "old" LL partition(s)...


From the screen shot - It looks like you're installing ---- /sda9 appears to have LL 5.0 on it --- you can choose this to reformat and use.
I can only see /sda8,9,6.. but I would assume sda8 as small as it maybe a boot ??

For the others disks I would leave as is (untouched)
sda1 likely boot (windows) -- sda2,4,5,6 - figuring Windows as NTFS... and sda3 being unknown is likely the Windows restore/boot partition

So, I chose sda 8 and 9. It installed it nicely. After rebooting I have the bootloader and can choose Ubuntu or Windows. However, when I choose Ubuntu it starts loading and then after a few seconds the screen turns black. What can I do now?
Also, I noticed in the BIOS there are two Ubuntus as boot options. Why is that? Is that because I first installed legacy and then uefi?
Well, I can still load Windows...

I figured it out. It was because I choose to download the updates during the installation. That somehow screwed it up. I reinstalled Linux Lite without the updates and then it worked. I installed the updates afterwards.
