Update to LL 5 - Whisker Menu - JohnD - 06-06-2020 I've tweaked many menu entries with the menu editor.
Will the update to LL 5 overwrite my menu entries? ![]() Re: Update to LL 5 - Whisker Menu - Moltke - 06-06-2020 (06-06-2020, 02:15 PM)JohnD link Wrote:I've tweaked many menu entries with the menu editor. As stated in the released announcement Quote:There is no upgrade path to or from RC releases. This means that in order to use Linux Lite 5.0 you'll have to perform a fresh, clean install; download LL 5.0.iso, made a backup of your important data and install the new version which of course will completely overwrite your LL 4.8 install. So ... yes, whatever customizations you've made will have to make them again after installing 5.0. I don't know, since 5.0 has seen some upgrades in some base packages - python 2 is no more - if you could save those either by using timeshift or just saving them to a .gzip compressed file and once you have 5.0 installed apply/copy/paste them into the new install, I think [member=2]Jerry[/member] or [member=5916]trinidad[/member] surely have a better knowledge than I do on this. Hope this helps! ![]() Re: Update to LL 5 - Whisker Menu - johnnyboy5000 - 06-16-2020 I'm on LL 4.8. So if I update to LL 5, will the install completely erase my LL 4.8 with all complied application and system tweaks? You could save those and restore them later to the new install, not sure about the process though. Re: Update to LL 5 - Whisker Menu - johnnyboy5000 - 06-16-2020 Thanks for that info. I’ll probably buy another SSD to install LL5. A lot went into this LL4 system which is optimized for audio recording with Bitwig, Re: Update to LL 5 - Whisker Menu - Moltke - 06-17-2020 (06-16-2020, 11:20 PM)johnnyboy5000 link Wrote:Thanks for that info. Like I said, I'm not sure since LL 5.0 has seen some major upgrades regarding libraries and stuff, how the process to restore those settings and customizations you've made once saved into the new install is, it shouldn't be difficult though. I guess you might try one thing at a time, create some snapshop before with timeshift should anything go wrong you can revert to a previous state. Re: Update to LL 5 - Whisker Menu - DeepThought - 06-17-2020 with your file-manager open, click on view and put a tick in the box Show Hidden Files. Now look in your home folder for .config folder.... all your personal customizations can be found in here. It should be possible to copy the relevant files, or even the whole .config folder and overwrite the .config folder or files on your new installation. This is what I would do if I have to upgrade to LL 5. I will just copy the config folder in a flash drive and overwrite it later in LL 5. |
