10 minutes to boot after update 3.8 32bit - scullion - 01-11-2020
Hello,
I have used LL 3.8 32bit for some time without a problem, it is installed on an old Latitude D420 with 2GB RAM and a 160GB hard drive.
Recently I received notification that updates were available and installed them as usual without a noticeable change.
When I rebooted the next day, the usual options screen appeared and timed out, I then got the following:
Booting linux lite 3.8 (sda1)
(hd0.0)
[Linux-bzImage,setup=0x4200,size=0x6a16a0]
This screen remained for approx 8 minutes with the drive light illuminated continually. The normal, scrolling, boot up screen then followed and the desktop appeared. The system works perfectly.
I tried autoremove and update-grub with no success and I have to admit I'm stumped.
Please, can anyone throw some lite on the situation?

Can occur with kernel updates on 32bit systems. Subsequent boots should be ok.

Now I'm informed I won't make that mistake again. I removed the updated kernel and everything is back to normal.

Just reading this post and wondered if using Update Manager lite might be helpful for others running LL 3.8 like myself as you can choose the level of update (I do 1-3 and not 4 & 5).
Might this have avoided what happened here?
Perhaps Ralphy, Deep Thought or Artim might comment..?

Hi Janet,
Ralphy is no longer able to maintain and support that update manager here for series 4 and here for Series 3.
They are based on Linux Mint's updater and I believe they would have prevented your problem if set up to allow only security updates, etc.
HOWEVER,
This is not the official/approved/sanctioned/authorized method of updating Linux Lite and I can't officially recommend it here in Linux Lite's own forum!
New users - to whom LL is aimed - cannot be expected to know how to selectively update Linux Lite, and it isn't even an issue very often. But when it happens, whoa! Then it's "run to the forum for answers," maybe even on a borrowed computer or internet-able cellphone.
This single issue is the one and only reason I can't recommend Linux Lite unless I install it myself, setting safe updating parameters.
