Fresh installation LL 4.4 on HP Prodesk 400 - Malinas - 10-04-2019
Hello to Everyone,
I'm a silent user of Linux Lite since 3.6 version, gradually going up to 4.4.
Recently I've got into trouble trying a fresh installation, sole OS, on Desktop HP ProDesk 400 G5 MT, Intel Core Coffee Lake 8th Gen i5-8500, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, code 4HR58EA.
Knowing the UEFI is supported only in a testing version of LL 4.2, I have set in BIOS: Legacy support, no Secure Boot and Legacy boot.
The partitioning is 2 MB for BIOS_grub, 50 GB for boot, 6 GB swap and 196 GB for Home partition.
I installed from DVD, then tried from USB and every time I've got the same error No system boot, install an OS on your disk.
Interesting is that when I use the installation from DVD, after booting error and getting back to a new trial with the option from DVD menu -"Boot from the first disk"- the system is booting from SSD with the configured desktop interface. Booting from USB this option of "Boot from the first disk" is driving me back to USB booting menu.
Just to mention that I have tried a manual reinstallation of the grub boot menu with the same result.
I left no option I'm aware of therefore any piece of advice or suggestion might be valuable.

I'd do maybe 1gb for /boot -- give root(/) something (maybe the 50gb) -- /home and swap fine..
- Assuming you're choosing Something Else for partitioning on install...
- BIOS will need to stay in legacy and cannot be set back after install...
Me, I would go ahead and try the UEFI version - don't let the "test" deter you.. I have the UEFI version running on 2 systems and its just as stable..
Although 4.2 it will update to 4.6
- Set UEFI and SecureBoot back to enabled prior to install...

2 mb for grub bios is for a GPT partitioning.
I've tried with a HDD - Seagate Barracuda with a MBR partitioning and worked like charm.
Then I've checked the SSD drive for errors and passed all the way.
So, I'm really confused with a lot of "why"s in my mind.

Try the MRB with the SSD... (Legacy BIOS) it will probably work..
If wanting GPT/UEFI - try the UEFI build, I would highly suggest - its not so much a test OS like the Beta/Pre-releases. It is stable..

None of these worked. The installer is reserving the first 1 Mb as a free space and then starts to build-up the partitioning system. So, no way to go with MBR as far as the first "track" is not available to write. Also, trying to go with manual MBR partitioning the installer is returning a message of a recommendation for GPT partitioning usage.
The recommended links I followed before starting to open this post.
So, I believe there should be something special about the installation on SSD drives. Maybe I should have been mentioning that is a SSD drive installed on PCI Express mainboard interface. I'm surprised that nobody went through such experience.

How has the install faired with the UEFI build? it allows for GPT partitions...

The UEFI LL installer is in the above thread - not the same download as the typical download.

My aim was to avoid UEFI boot but using the GPT partitioning system, which in my understanding it has to work with the usual installation version, not the UEFI installer.
Am I wrong?

I would not --- GPT is a part of UEFI.. or as quoted - https://www.aioboot.com/en/gpt-legacy/[/size]
