Frequent Updates=Extraordinary Stability? - mdiemer - 03-30-2019 I am struck by how many updates Linux Lite has. Compared to the Ubuntu flavors, for example. but then I realized how incredibly stable this operating system is, more-so than any other I have used. Which is why it is the only Linux that I have never removed from my system. It just keeps working smoothly. So, are the frequent updates the reason? In the past, I have tended to stick with LTS versions of Mint, Ubuntu etc. The updates are less frequent, compared to Lite. Does this make Lite a rolling release? Just some thoughts going through my mind. Another is that this OS is very underrated. Anyone else have that thought? Just curious. Re: Frequent Updates=Extraordinary Stability? - Valtam - 03-30-2019 Main reasons. Linux Lite total packages - 2068 Ubuntu total packages - 2548 nearly 500 more packages to update Linux Lite XFCE - XFCE do not release software often, they work behind the scenes to ensure software is rock solid before it's released. Smaller Dev team than most. Ubuntu Gnome - Gnome release software more often. More active developers than XFCE. Ubuntu has a built in reminder for updates so it can seem like they have more. LL has Lite Updates Notify, which is optional but when installed, could give the same impression. Re: Frequent Updates=Extraordinary Stability? - mdiemer - 03-30-2019 Not sure I understand all that, but all I know is Linux Lite is extremely stable. You must work very hard, Jerry, and it shows. Just giving credit where it is due. Sorry if I have ever given any indication otherwise. Sorry if I have ever given any indication otherwise. Indeed! The developers' work on Linux Lite has been absolutely outstanding. Were it not for the Ubuntu base (and there's still no better base to build on for newbie-friendliness), and it's instability regarding updates, even in the LTS versions, every downstream derivative might be as wonderfully stable as Linux Lite! |
