dual boot question - Trudyg - 02-16-2019

I just installed LL 4.0 and followed the instructions to dual boot alongside Windows 7.  The install went great, but how do I get to windows now?  I don't see it anywhere.  Did I overwrite it and now it's gone?  That wouldn't be the end of the world, I just want to know if I should try harder to figure it out or just accept that windows is gone.

Hi [member=9068]Trudyg[/member] First, what do you mean you don't see it anywhere? If you followed instructions you should be presented with a grub screen where you can select between Linux Lite and Windows, if that isn't the case then I think you'll have to:
1.- Click on menu and in the search bar type "gparted" and select it so it opens, you'll be asked for your password, type it in and once gparted has completelly loaded take a screenshot and past it here using  imgur service so we can tell whether it's there or not.

2.- Boot up Linux Lite in Live mode and when in the desktop you should see some devices unmounted, mount them and see whether one of those is your windows partition.

Hope this helps! Smile

Re: dual boot question - Trudyg - 02-16-2019

When I do the gparted thing, I don't see anything saying windows 7, which I saw before I did this.  I don't know how to do a screenshot so will have to do some homework on that first and then get back here.  I also don't see any unmounted devices, but maybe I don't know how to find that, either.  I'm not good at computers, as you can see.  I'll do some research and then come back with what I find out.  I should see windows 7 when I look at the partitions, tho, and I don't.  I also didn't see anything saying grub

I"m sorry, but I just cant' figure out how to do this.  All the instructions i read assume I know an awful lot that I don't.

1.- To take screenshot hit "prt sc" key on your keyboard, a window will pop up for you to select what you want to do, select "active window" and change the time to "6" secs, then click on gparted and wait, a  dialog box asking what you want to do with the screenshot shows up, select "upload to imgur" and click ok. A small window appears and it says that image it's being uploaded, once it finishes you'll see something like this

select "BBcode for forums" and past it here.

2.- Grub screen is a, well, a screen where you select which OS you want to boot from and looks something like this

It should be the first thing you see after bios. If you can't see that then chances are you might have erased Windows Sad

I hope this is the correct link to my screenshot.

Re: dual boot question - Trudyg - 02-16-2019

I never got the grub screen shot.  I think my windows is gone.

Re: dual boot question - torreydale - 02-16-2019

Unless you have another drive we cannot see from your image, I don't see Windows installed.  In the upper right hand corner, where you see 465.76GB, there appears to be a dropdown.  Is another drive in that list?

Re: dual boot question - Trudyg - 02-16-2019

The dropdown simply has    /dev/sda  (465.76 GiB)    So, windows is gone.  Oh well, I thought that might happen so backed up everything that I wanted to keep.  Thanks for your help.

[member=9068]Trudyg[/member] ,

Now is as good a time as ever to reinstall Linux Lite from scratch using the "Erase Disk" option.  Use all the other default options.  By the way, do not choose to install updates as part of the install.  It makes the install take much longer.  Do the updates afterwards.
