Alternative File Manager to Thunar.? - Wirezfree - 07-06-2014
Hello All,
I was looking at pcmanfm file manger to replace Thunar.
But I noticed it wants to install a significant number of packages.
Is this going to bloat LL2 for the sake of having a new file manager.

Hello Wirezfree.
I don't know if an alternate file manager like PCManFM would run well or bloat an install of LL2 but it would be interesting to know. This seems like a good testing project - either in virtualbox or on a test system.
One note of caution especially for those new to linux. LL is designed and tested around the Thunar file manager, installing an alternate filemanager may have undesirable consequences.

I always have Dolphin with all of the distributions I work with.
When accustomed to it it is a nice FM.
I háve tried Nautilus in LL. No problem, but I uninstalled it.
I don't know if one can use it as default-FM without problems.
I have done it in some version of Xubuntu.

Hello!
I used to REALLY like PCManFM - until they decided that we can't be trusted with root access anymore, and removed the feature in the latest version.
There are ways to reinstate root access to PCManFM, but installing root access as a right-click option opens up too much of the OS to root access. All in all, Thunar is looking better and better these days...

We only support software we ship with LL. If you want to use something other than what we ship, you need to know what you're doing. Having said that you're still welcome to ask for support for non-shipped software, you just may not receive the same level of support.

There is so much software in and outside the repository...
LL is very different now here after install of the OS and after the install of my regular day-to-day software..
And it is still working great.
Do you know Valtam, why some recorders don't work? Is that a problem with Alsa? (It is not only with LL2, also with Xubuntu and Mint. And no serious problem.)

So much software, so many variables. You can start a new thread specifically stating what problem you are having if you like.

If you want a nice light-weight file manager, try SpaceFM.
