Install Updates reports 'computer not connected to Internet' - bfb - 07-01-2018

Which it is or I wouldn't be posting. I have updated with sudo-apt get update, but I don't understand why the Lite Updater gives this report.
It is a fresh install of Lite 4.0 on a laptop with Wifi which works for everything else

I have now also had to use Synaptic to update to the latest Kernel, but this and using sudo would not be second nature to people coming from Windows who are supposed to be the target audience. What I don't understand is the total silence on this problem from what is reputed to be a helpful Forum...

So you're saying we're not a helpful Forum, and you still want people to help you. There are 1000's of online forums with memberships 100, 1000 fold our membership and they have unanswered threads. I'm really getting tired of people seeking support who think it's an automatic right to get an answer. People give their time here freely. How dare you.

10 hours later @ 10:05:02 PM you're complaining about lack of reponse !!!

On some forums with a much bigger membership threads never get answered or when they do it's with the refrain "RTFM"
not something I've ever seen on here.

So you should take into account everyone is a volunteer on here. LL is used worldwide so different time zones come into play. When someone posts a question, people could be sleeping, working, enjoying personal time with families, or even just taking a break from their pc and not know about your problems.

SO HAVE PATIENCE Smile

Having said that, I'll take a stab at helping you with your problem. LL 4.0 is based on ubuntu 18.04 and this is something that happened when I tried Xubuntu 18.04.
At sometime ubuntu switched to using NETPLAN and .yaml config files for it's network configuration.

https://netplan.io/

For most people the .yaml file is created at install with no problem but sometimes it isn't. Even so, most programs will still work ok, browsers will still connect ok, as you have noticed using the terminal or synaptic works.

I think the problem lies in the error checking done throws up an error when the yaml file is incorrect hence your, not connected message.

How to test if this is your problem, right-click on your network icon in the panel and look under ethernet at the top. If it says device not managed then it's a good chance your yaml file is not correct.

I can't tell you what to write in your yaml file but do some reading on the above website. Examples are given and might solve you problem.

If this does not solve your problem then I do apologise for wasting your time with this long post Smile

I don't think bfb meant any harm.  He's just feeling a bit frustrated with the problem he has which, as a newbie, is totally understandable.  I've been there, and can relate to that.

I think there's sometimes a conflict between "the instant click society" of the internet we've now become embedded in, which can create a mentality where we've grown to expect everything to be just a click away, forgetting the reality of things
as DeepThought  points out ...

Sorry I appear to have ruffled a few feathers with my post.I first asked the question but perhaps in the wrong section of the forum a while ago, and had a brief response from Trinidad which I answered:
https://www.freecinema2022.gq/forums/on-topic/install-updates-reports-'computer-not-connected-to-internet'/so in fact I was not really being as impatient as all that Smile
From Jerry's answer "how dare you" I take it that he is irritated that he does not know the  answer and so is shooting the messenger who raised the question.  ;D
To be absolutely clear I am delighted with linuxlite and it is the only system I have it all my five computers. I regularly proselytize for it and have resisted all attempts from friends of mine to go over to Linux Mint.
BUT I have to point out that there is a problem here which I am trying to bring to your attention, and which in my case I am slightly able to mitigate because I can use terminal and synaptic which would not be the case of people coming straight from Windows.
The fact that Deep Thought find something similar in Xubuntu makes me think that there is a software problem, and it is not just me being stupid.
Thanks to him for the helpful suggestion which I will investigate, although as I explained I am on Wifi so won't find the ethernet managed I think.....it is greyed  out.
Perhaps my second post born out of frustration of having waited for a reply for a couple of weeks seemed querulous; but I don't think it merited the aggression of the responses it received.

'How dare you' - refers to the fact that I will jealously defend the good name of those members who offer their time freely. I for one, certainly won't be offering you any type of support in the future.

If you attack the good name of a Forum that has a history of being helpful, you can expect people to respond passionately about your claims of it not being helpful. Perhaps you should reconsider your move to Linux Mint. You may even receive a 100% response rate to any questions you have there. I will enjoy your disappointment of that expectation from here.

So you don't know the answer then?  ;D ;D ;D

Now you're just deliberately being antagonistic. That is completely against the spirit of these Forums, which you have clearly showed you have no respect for. Goodbye.
