Installing 4.0 (On Wife's Computer) - mdiemer - 05-16-2018
I will be installing LL 4.0 as soon as it comes out on my computer, and then on my wife's. I anticipate no trouble with my old Gateway GT5656, I already have 3.8 on it with Windows 7, no problems. I want to make sure I don't mess her laptop up. It's a Dell Inspiron N7010. I'm almost positive it uses BIOS rather than UEFI; I can find nothing about UEFI anywhere in support documentation. So, it should go in as smoothly as mine did. One difference with hers is that the install disc is from Dell. (I had to reinstall Windows 7 awhile back, called Dell as I had no disc, and they airmailed it to me in 2 days!). It has a Dell boot screen, versus the Windows 7 one, with those wavy viney things (what was that anyway?).
Should I be on the lookout for anything unusual, since it installed from a Dell disc? I sure don't want to mess up her laptop. I've been talking up Linux for a few years now, and if I blow this, I'll never live it down.

I hear ya brother. Mine blames everything that goes wrong with her Windows 10 computer on me. She hates the KIS and the Gibson HDD protection I put on it and constantly tells me how it worked perfectly when she bought it, and when I show her what's going on with it she just gets mad and gets up and leaves her desk. Get all your specs together for her LT and post them here first. The people here can figure out if you're going to be okay.

That's rough. Mine isn't that bad, but she does get wicked impatient. Like I said recently in another post, they just want the damn thing to work. Explanations don't impress them, especially if intended to show off one's geekiness (or pseudo-geekiness, in my case).
Off the top of my head, she has an i5 with 6GB ram, and 1TB HDD. It's a very nice Dell Inspiron N7010. 64 bit Windows 7. I've replaced the HDD, put two batteries in and a new keyboard. Works like new, although it's about 7 years old. I have a lot of experience with dual-booting, but as I said this is for hers, not mine. Heck, I almost welcome welcome when mine goes bad, it gives me something to do. But with hers, I'm starting to get nervous just thinking about it...

Why not try a live CD set up as a demo that change is no change.

Good point. Therefore try a live CD from version 3.8. The aim is to a) highlight any potential setup problems with the laptop ( before demonstrating
) and them demonstarte that there is little to fear from the change. Just a thought.

The slow boot could be because of the USB Key speed. I use a minimum of 100 read and write personnaly.
Note : Last time I used a DVD, it wuz deadly. :-S
