is it possible to connect Virtualbox Windows to internet? - Searchernow - 12-30-2017

I have installed VM Win XP successfully, but it wants to go online to validate the product code I entered.

Simple question: is this possible?

I am the target audience for LL, with no interest in coding etc. Following is a sample of FAQ on Virtualbox site (they should try this out on people, face to face! Though maybe it's only aimed at those in the know).

"Q:I have set up a VM with NAT networking, but it can't access internet while my Host system can.
A: NAT only translates TCP or UDP. Additionally it handles a subset of ICMP necessary for ping. One of the common reasons is that your task requires another IP protocol. Some VPN protocols use GRE which is not translated.

Another common issues is that the DNS relay within the VirtualBox VMM only forwards all DNS queries to the first configured DNS server known to the host and does not search the entire DNS server list. If this DNS server is offline the hot will fail-over to the second server on the DNS list, etc., but the guest will effectively loose DNS." .... it gets worse after this ....

I will probably stay with Win7 pc for my cad work.

If using NAT Network make sure "promiscuous" is set to ALLOW (deny will not) - under advanced.. For simplicity you can use BRIDGED.. Bridge will use same adapter (and IP I believe) where NAT will use a VB NIC card and should pull its own IP..

Once set to allow same DNS/Gateway ETC will be used

If you want you can delve deeper with networking where the VM's use their own networks (internal), but this is more advanced...

Couple of things I'd add. There is no phone support for XP anymore, at least for three years or so. Not sure why you'd bother with XP, given that Windows 7, 8, 10 would have solved the connection issue at install. Certainly no need to validate XP as the activation loop can be reset manually to 30 days as many times as you want. See below.

If your base system is LL you're probably stuck with Oracle, but with Ubuntu you could use gnome-boxes which is much easier to setup.

Thanks Firenice, I tried those, and "connected cable", but still no internet. I suspect the problem is in XP...?

Thanks too Trinidad - I don't have a copy of 7, and admittedly XP looks very dated. But I note re looping back every 30 days. I wonder too about "updates", though I suppose most of those refer to security, which presumably isn't a problem if the vm is always offline!

Anyway, I was just trying things out (and wrecking my head while supposedly on a Christmas break) to see if my work pc could change to LL, including running the likes of Rhino4 and CS3 (I'm very back-dated!). But they're made for Windows so I think I'll leave them there on my Win7.

Best wishes both, thanks and Happy New Year!
