Question to developers about upgrading - smhardesty - 09-02-2017
I'm going to pose this question primarily to the developers, but any of you guys with loads of Linux knowledge chip in too. Over the years that I have run some flavor of Linux, there has always been a mild disagreement over whether or not to do a version upgrade. The three trains of thought are, 1) Never do an upgrade if your computer is running just fine, 2) Doing upgrades is the smartest thing you can do because of improvements to the distro, and 3) Only do an upgrade if it is a major release version as in from 3.4 to 4.0.
So what do you developers think the is the right thing to do? My laptop is running so smoothly I'd sure hate to do anything to jinx that. Any and all opinions welcome here.

Going to bypass the debate portion.. Security should win for the need to update..
So for those debating and wondering if there system can handle it.. You have a great running system; so of the new stuff do you really need it? Do you know? Still its new and you really want to see... ;D ;D
Try it.. Especially if you in the same series (i.e.3.2 or 3.4 going to 3.6) just add 1 little step to the process.
Make a Systemback Restore point.. If after the upgrade things aren't happy you can easily revert back...
I did this when I upgraded each of my 3 systems.. Run the updates - Create a Restore Point - Lite Upgrade - Then another Restore after the upgrade and confirmed all is well.. In the end you'll have a before and after...

You should regularly run updates and whenever Linux Lite makes an in-series upgrade available, you should run that, too. When the 4.x series arrives in June 2018, you don't have to upgrade to it because the 3.x series will still be supported until April 2021. I have a desktop that is still on Linux Lite 2.8. It is supported until April 2019. No more in series upgrades are expected, but I regularly run updates on it.
There is no good reason to knowingly run an unsupported operating system or an out of date Internet browser, especially when Linux Lite makes it so easy not to.

OK. I do run updates, regularly. I'd never think of running any OS without making sure I had all the latest updates, especially the security updates.
Since I had never used anything even similar to Systemback before, I have to remember to do that. I have 3 restore points now. And yes, I'd sure do that prior to doing an upgrade, whether major or minor. I'd have to say that's one feature of Lite that I've learned to like.
Seems you both agree that upgrading in-series, or a minor upgrade, is the thing to do. I'll wait just a bit to see if there are any glitches reported with the 3.6 upgrade, then do one myself.
