slimjet browser not responding and thunderbird slow - TMG1961 - 08-15-2017 I am using slimjet browser. All is fine as long as i use 1 or 2 tabs. If i open more then the browser completely freezes up and cpu usage goes all the way up to 100% ad stays there. I then have to wait till all the tabs are loaded before i can do anything. Second problem is starting of thunderbird. It takes very long to open. It used to be fast but the last weeks it is getting slower and slower. Anyone got any ideas on both problems? Re: slimjet browser not responding and thunderbird slow - bitsnpcs - 08-15-2017 Hello TMG1961, I haven't used this browser myself. I have a few ideas - 1 - try a live medium LL, with the browser and Thunderbird to compare the opening times of new LL and current install, I understand the live media loads slower so if the browser and thunderbird are loading faster on live media then its a good indication it is not hardware issues. 2 - to run Memtest86. 3 - Menu>Lite Tweaks to do the clean tasks ? (browser cache, thumbnail cache etc.). Also Lite Tweaks "Preload Apps" for faster start up ? I tried preload apps but i dont see a difference in loading time. Havent run the memtest86 yet, will give it a run later today when i get back home Re: slimjet browser not responding and thunderbird slow - bitsnpcs - 08-16-2017 (08-16-2017, 07:28 AM)TMG1961 link Wrote: At the moment i am not able to try it with a live medium, so this option will have to wait untill i get a new usb drive. Hello TMG1961, I know you are familiar with Lite tweaks , the screenshot helps me to write a bit clearer sometimes. When you get back home can you try the Clean Tasks in Lite Tweaks, zRam, and the Memtest86 to check ram modules. Hope you have a good day. If it is possible to rule out some hardware issues, accumulated things, it gives a place to move on from.
If you are not, in Menu>System>Lite Tweaks can you -
Re: slimjet browser not responding and thunderbird slow - TMG1961 - 08-16-2017 I did run a memtest86 and memory passedwithout any errors. Did enable zRam but it did not improve boottime for thunderbird and the problems with multiple tbs also still remains. I do a cleanup every evening before going to bed. Not sure what the problem is. Is there anything else i can try to figure out what the bottleneck is? Re: slimjet browser not responding and thunderbird slow - bitsnpcs - 08-16-2017 Hello TMG1961, have you compacted your databases in Thunderbird recently ? To do, in left pane underneath your email address it says inbox, right click your inbox and select "Compact" from the Menu. You should compact the databases for each inbox/email account in Thunderbird. To try and find the bottleneck - you can see which Tasks are running by - Menu>System>Task Manager you can see Resource Usage by - Menu>System>Resource Usage Do you have any plugins running in Thunderbird, or do you it synced ? I notice there were slowness issues mentioned on an older Ubuntu thread with cause being when running anti virus and Thunderbird on Linux. I notice this link on the final bullet point of Common Problems section it talks about - "If you are using Linux... try setting layers.prefer-opengl true instead....." and also some other things to try such as changing to SilverMel theme This final bullet point is only a small sized paragraph, but it is about things I do not understand, maybe you will understand it better when reading it. Edit - This link explains about compacting Thunderbird folders, and also has a tutorial on how to set up automated compacting in future to your own specified parameters 8) Re: slimjet browser not responding and thunderbird slow - TMG1961 - 08-17-2017 Hi bitsnpcs, I haven't compacted my database in thunderbird. I use IMAP, so not sure if i then still need to compact it. Did have a look at your link for copacting and have it set up. I am not running any plugins or anti virus. Not sure what you mean by using it synced. I will have a look at the links you profided me later today. I have added a link to the sreenshot of task manager and resource usage. Doesnt say anything to me. Had 1 browser window with 1 tab open at that time. Re: slimjet browser not responding and thunderbird slow - bitsnpcs - 08-17-2017 Hello TMG1961, in your task manager it shows this - Code: python/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/mintUpdate.py I looked on Google about this, from the results it seems to be you are running "Unattended Updates" from Linux Mint" ? Are you running Linux Lite in Virtual Box as a VM, or dual booting with Linux Mint ? From the Panel it shows the Cloud Server icon, are you connected to the cloud server ? (weather plugin?) Have you tried disconnecting this and using Thunderbird ? The envelope icon, is it an automated email checking software /plugin that is running (maybe from browser if synced) ? What is the tick on the shield icon, a firewall other than UFW ? Edit - synced - Thunderbird can be synced to a browser profiles (I've never used these), as both Thunderbird and your chosen browser are slow, it is why I asked about this setting in Thunderbird and the browser. Edit2 - This link discusses from your Task Manager "Tumblerd" and how it can resource hog to over 90% on cpu cores https://askubuntu.com/questions/89826/what-is-tumblerd/253908#253908 This link discusses how Tumblerd is used to display icons in place of using Thunar, and that it should be disabled by default, or removed - https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=41004 Other than the searches I have not info or experience of this. Re: slimjet browser not responding and thunderbird slow - TMG1961 - 08-17-2017 I am not running any virtual boxes or dual booting. Only thing installed on laptop is LL 3.4. So no idea what unattended updates from Linux Mint are doing on the laptop. Yes i have the weather plugin installed and it runs in the background. But i have that all the time and thunderbird opened faster before even with the weather plugin running. It doesnt make any diference if i disable the weather plugin or not The tick on the icon shield is to show that LL is up to date. Its from the Update Manager for Linux Lite 3.x Series. Got a feeling that this is why he unattended updates from Linux int are on my system. The envelope is xfce mailwatch. I also noticed no difference in opening of thunderbird after compacting the databases. I got 2 inboxes in thunderbird..well actually 3 but one isnt checked anymore but that was a pop3 adres so left it in there so i still have the emails. Re: slimjet browser not responding and thunderbird slow - bitsnpcs - 08-17-2017 Hello, I have done fsearch for this script, and also looked manually some folders, I do not see this script on 3.2. It may be as you write for 3.4, you would need the staff to verify it. I only have the one email in Thunderbird on LL. I have also my personal Protonmail only using on web and phone, on the other computer I have the 5 email address, only 1 is mine for personal use (same 1 as LL). I do the checking for others, it is one of my chores etc. Also 2 of Gmail but not checking on desktop. 1 is mine for G+ and blogs, the other I only rarely check it for someone else when they ask me to do it for a time. I don't use any checker, just manually. I think I am out of ideas But I will continue to look and try to help solve it. Edit - I have just checked Linux Lite 3.4 64bit in VirtualBox, made all the latest updates, and turned on Lite Updates Notify. I then searched using both Catfish, (it sadly doesn't have fsearch), and manually for this, Linux Mint Python script, and it is not found on LL 3.4 64 Bit. It is also not showing in the Task Manager. I have not installed slimjet browser, xfce mail watcher or the weather plugin. Can someone else who is running slimjet browser open it and Thunderbird and look for this script in their task manager, and also do a search for it. Can someone who is already running either or both of the weather plugin, and the xfce mail watcher, also check their task manager and do a search for this Linux Mint python script. This will enable us to determine if any of these are the installer for it. If nobody is using it, I will read about each and add them one at a time and check each time, I will need to do this tonight, but it is not any problem. |
