Hi. Newbie. Recently installed Lite 3.4 on Dell Inspiron 5565.
When I leave it alone for a little it doesn't just sleep, like Windows, it half turns off. The only way I can get it to start is by holding power to completely turn off and start from scratch. this is kind of a pain. I have tried playing with Power Manager, it was set on "never", which obviously wasn't true, for plugged and unplugged, I set it to the max and it did the same thing in an hour or less maybe. This is a hassle if I want to download something. I am used to leaving this to happen overnight sometimes... Any help would be appreciated.

Seems to not be "turning off" now. Not sure why unless it needed to restart after applying changes. Not really solved but certainly livable.

Here suspend becomes unstable. Sometimes the pc doesn't want to display after wake up, sometimes things go right, sometimes it displays after half a minute.

Are you dual booting with Windows 10 on this machine?

I ask because Windows 10 on newer Dells is integrated into some Dell setup utility functions. (some options won't even appear unless you make changes in Windows first) Off the top of my head there are several different things you can try here to get the functioanlity you desire.
1) change the S settings in the setup utility, and disable fast boot from the UI in Windows
2) setup Widows 10 to behave the way you want LL to behave
3) disable updates in Windows 10
4) change the battery saver settings in Windows 10
5) unmount the Windows partition manually after LL boots (it may be mounted and backgrounded whether it says so or not, so mount and then unmount)
6) Whenever you shut down Windows to switch to LL hold the shift key down until the machine goes off.
Try one or all of the above. If you have wiped Windows from the HDD you have probably wiped access to some of the functionality of the Dell setup utility. Good luck.

Did you set everything in both the "System" tab AND "Display" tab to "never"? I had to be sure both tabs were set before I finally got my Lenovo laptop to not Sleep or Hibernate. Just a thought.

In LL3.6 'suspend' stil does not behave 100% right.
It looks like every once in two times suspend-restart the system is waiting for the netmanager for about half a minute.
(I see notifications of disconnecting and connecting.)
No alarm. Suspend is usable.

I have two business class laptops. One is a Dell Latitude e6430. The other is a Lenovo Thinkpad x250. They both hibernate and sleep well, though the Thinkpad does so more effortlessly.

I was v surprised to read of Thorin's and rijnsma's experiences as one of the highlights for me has been LinLite's hibernation, which is practically faultless on my Acer, Philips and Dell laptops (the latter 2 are old XP laptops so no UEFI interference). I don't like Suspend because it needs power and I have never before found a system that comes back from hibernation properly.
All I can suggest is you make sure you go through all the tabs in Power Manager carefully because they do overlap and it's possible to set something OFF in one tab only for another tab to have a setting that fights it - e.g. the 'lock session' setting in Security and the Handle Display Power Management setting in Display, but others are possible too.
Good luck with this as although it's "not a stopper" it is very frustrating if you always have to be thinking about whether you should power down or not.
