SOLVED -Wanting to extract soundtrack from MP4 and convert to flac. - newtusmaximus - 05-13-2017
I have a tv music video from which I would like to extract the soundtrack and convert to flac.
I believe I can convert the mp4 to flac using vlc
a) I have installed flac from synaptic.
b) opening vlc and clicking on media/convert I have added the mp4 file I am interested in.
c) Clicking on convert/save select convert I have chose flac from the profile option.
d) From Destination for the converted file all I get is a .ts file option
Any advice as to what I am doing wrong appreciated. Tks

Next to the Profile drop-down box, after you choose Audio-FLAC, hit the wrench button. I think if you choose Raw you will avoid using a container. Then you will have to manually add the .floc file extension to your output. VLC plays the resulting file, but VLC will play a lot of things.

Have you tried audacity for this job? I use it because I can edit the audio file bevor export and also make changes to the quality of the resulting audio file.
Please let me know if you require a short "how to..." with audacity.

Paul119, thank you for your suggestion. It worked and the file was sure RAW
Not compressed at all. Also VLC exreacted the audio as an AAC? which was a lot small but lossy? Playing around now with the "Raw" flac and seeing whether I can condense it using terminal.flac commands. Good learning curve. Thank again.

You're welcome. Over on the Audio tab you can simply check "keep original track", and if the track is already compressed you'll retain its size. You could also play around with using various containers, but still using the .flac extension. Beyond that, I don't know.
