Ccleaner or Defraggler or Antivirus - emusthroat - 05-22-2014 Does LL 2.0 need a C cleaner or to be defragmented? Does it need an antivirus? I was told that NO linux system has a registry for registry errors to occur in. Is this so? Re: Ccleaner or Defraggler or Antivirus - gold_finger - 05-22-2014 Not necessary in Linux. There's a program called bleachbit that some people use to clean things up, but it can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Generally speaking Linux doesn't leave bits and pieces of things all over the place to be cleaned up. If you allow the web browser to store a lot of cached files, then that's one thing to clean periodically. But, just have the browser clear out the cache files every once and a while -- no need for a special program for that. Regarding Anti-virus -- no real need (for now at least) for that unless you plan on sharing files with Windows machines. Something downloaded from Internet could be infected with a Windows virus. That won't affect your Linux system, but if you share the file with a Windows system, that could be bad news. So, some people use an anti-virus just for scanning questionable files that might get used on a Windows system. I haven't used it, but there's an anti-virus for doing that called clamav. If you install the GUI front-end for it, clamtk, it will automatically pull-in clamav and all other packages you need to run it. Re: Ccleaner or Defraggler or Antivirus - Teddy - 05-22-2014 For defragging, you don't need to do it on Linux. It simply isn't needed, unless you move terabytes and terabytes of data on a daily basis. If you would like to know how to defrag Linux anyway, here is a video. Beware: Do not attempt if you run your computer on a Solid State Drive (SSD). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oapOKNzNJNs Re: Ccleaner or Defraggler or Antivirus - N4RPS - 05-23-2014 (05-22-2014, 11:55 PM)Teddy5090 link Wrote: Beware: Do not attempt if you run your computer on a Solid State Drive (SSD). That is correct. You DNEVER defragment SSDs, even on Windows, unless you want to greatly decrease their useful life... 73 DE N4RPS Rob |
