Upgrade LL3 kernel to the latest available kernel - pedrito - 08-18-2016
Hi all. First of all, kudos to Jerry Benzecon and his mates : LL3 is a damn good & useful OS. I discovered LL with the 2.4 release and never switched to another distro. As many LL users, I come from the MS world (former Windows IT system engineer), but was immediately seduced by LL for home use : the ergonomic, the ease of configuration, the sames apps I used to install on my Windows at home, the interoperability with MS systems/infra, lightweight, stable, fast... Well I love it. This had to be said :-)
I am newbie in gnu or unix systems in general, and i have a couple of questions that may seem stupid to you guys, but I cannot get a very firm answer on the web and I would like your opinion:
1- Except for recent hardware support and security matters (which are very good reasons) is it worthy to try to upgrade to the latest available kernel ?
2 - If I do this is what will be the impact on the specific Linux Lite layers of the system ? I am almost sure that I would have to deal with some bugs but will it also deprecate some functionalities / user experience implemented for LL when using this new kernel ? More globally is it a good idea ?

I'm not a kernel guru.. But the Kernel will be dependent on hardware; running a newer kernel on older hardware may not run as cleanly as it did on a previous - but it very may run without issue.

The i5 you have should be fine, but again I'm not a guru.. If you do decide to try other kernels I'd recommend making a Systemback restore point, its an easy way to revert back to a prior state.

Well, my hardware seems to be correctly managed by my current kernel (4.4). I parsed my logs yesterday and just identified couple of errors related to power management in the whole week... So I have no formal reason to upgrade. I am just curious about the benefits (or not) of it. And if it has a sense. Coming from another technical universe (MS), sometimes i am not sure to consider this kind of stuff with the correct angle of view...
