2.8 vs. 3.0 - Coastie - 06-03-2016 What are the advantages of moving to 3.0 instead of just staying with 2.8? I think 2.8 will be supported until April 2019. :-\ Re: 2.8 vs. 3.0 - Monkeyman - 06-03-2016 I think the better question is, "what is the DISadvantage of moving to 3.0?". I've got 2.8 on my desktop and 3.0 on my laptop. So far, I'm not seeing any huge differences but I'd still rather stay on top of the game. Re: 2.8 vs. 3.0 - torreydale - 06-03-2016 Development for 2.8 has ceased, but you will continue to get security updates to your installed packages until April 2019. The advantage of moving to the next series is getting newer versions of packages, not just security updates. You'll also receive the newer functions and features (if any) of those updated packages. But it's perfectly fine to wait a while. I have installed version 3.0 to a virtual machine using Virtualbox so that I can participate in supporting forum users, but I haven't installed it to my laptop or desktop yet. And I'm in no rush. My favorite theme may not work. http://www.freecinema2022.gq/forums/release-announcements/linux-lite-3-0-final-released/msg23846/#msg23846 2. Got a lot of tweaking to do to get everything looking and working the way I like. 3. Programs to install again. So what are the advantages of moving to 3.0? I'll wait for a while to see if any bugs are found and fixed and I feel like spending a couple of hours tweaking, etc. ;D Re: 2.8 vs. 3.0 - firenice03 - 06-03-2016 My .02 ![]() I installed BETA to a desktop along with 2.8 - I still run 2.8 for the majority... On the Mini - I upgraded to a SSD and since it was a new HD I figured LL3.0 was the best route.. I have noticed a few minor things in the plus and minus columns, nothing as a just gotta have or a show stopper thou. 3.0 does seem to boot faster, it maybe that I've been using the mini more but I guess I could time it on the desktop.. For other benefits, see the 1st page of https://www.freecinema2022.gq/forums/release-announcements/linux-lite-3-0-final-released/ On the other side; having to set everything back up.. Apps, hardware/drivers, tweaks and modification to settings and apps; apps that have changed/updated that may not work as well as before (Conky is an example, not a LL issue) and XYZ to get back to an as it was before state.. Update if your ready to take on the task or as mentioned 2.8 is still supported 8) Re: 2.8 vs. 3.0 - Valtam - 06-03-2016 The whole idea behind this project is to get Windows users to try a linux based operating system. There's no pressure for existing linux users to install 3.0. Think of 3.0 as another version of Linux Lite for Windows folk to try.
