Very strange network error... - glin22 - 03-05-2016

Hi,

This is the first time I came across such a strange network problem like this.

What I am trying to do is to get onto a certain website but everything I have tried just doesn't work. The strange thing is I can get onto other websites with no problems whatsoever. I tested both Firefox and Chrome but I get the same result with the website in question, when I type in the address of the site in the address bar, I can see the indicator trying to do something but it just sits there, no data is loaded into the browser. Even in the host system nothing I've tried will work (I am using LinuxLite 2.8 in a virtual machine on a mac using El Capitan, the mac is the host, and I am on a wireless connection).

I had a talk with the tech person who provides internet access thinking it might be something on that end but he thought it was not that since I can get other websites besides the one I want. I've checked proxies, browser plugins, etc. I even did a traceroute on the site, it will go to a certain part and then no data gets transferred. If I ping the site, no pings happen. I've contacted the owner of the site, she's given me some things to try out but that hasn't done anything either.

If you have any ideas on how I might solve this problem, please let me know as I have completely run out of things to try out. Wow, what a mind blower, maybe it's something simple that's not set right but I don't know what to look for.

Thanks,

Glin22

You've left out the most important information in your post...the website address.

Re: Very strange network error... - glin22 - 03-05-2016

The name of the site I am trying to access is activecaptain.com.

Just tried it in Chromium on LL2.8, and it opens fine - no trouble.
It comes up as an https site.

Have you changed your DNS settings at any time? Does the site work from the Mac (host)?

Re: Very strange network error... - glin22 - 03-06-2016

Thanks much for checking to see if you could get on that site folks, appreciate that !

I don't think any of the DNS settings were changed but I am not sure what I should be checking out.

I cannot get activecaptain.com from the host OS either which is the Mac. I've talked with the owner of the site and she says there are no other reports of folks not being able to get on. I also talked with a tech person at the place which is the ISP for the site and he didn't think it was on their side since other websites come up just fine. He told me to check for proxy servers but I didn't see anything set for that.

I wish I knew more about networking, this one has got me totally stumped. Something in the computer is fouled up but I don't know what settings or area to check out.

Hi,

It works here fine... It seems quite quick:

It sounds like you have a DNS resolution issue.?
Given it's affecting both host & guest, Have you tried powering off you modem/router/cable-box ..??

If it was only LL guest, you can clear the DNS cache in LL:
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/dns-clean start

Re: Very strange network error... - avj - 03-06-2016

It may be helpful to know what browser extensions you are using. Certain browser extensions like Zenmate route your traffic through one of their servers, if the server you route through has previously had someone send malicious traffic that server's ip may be banned. If you use something like that I would try disabling the extension and see if I could view the site. Another suggestion is to turn off any other extensions you may have running one at a time and check the site, it should help you identify where the problem is. Since you don't have problems viewing other websites this is my best guess at where the problem lies.

Re: Very strange network error... - glin22 - 03-24-2016

I had other work to deal with so I couldn't get onto the forum for a while. I have some new information regarding this network problem.

What I found out is the person who I am helping with LL running on his Mac took his laptop to a coffee shop and was able to get on right away to activecaptain.com without any problems. So, what I am thinking is there is some sort of issue going on with the router setup in the marina like a filter on the traffic or something like that. The person at the marina said there were no problems with their router but I wonder about this. The only bummer is I really would like to know what was actually causing this to happen.

Anyway, thanks again to everyone who tried to give some help !
