2.4 on a Dell 1545 laptop - paul1149 - 07-26-2015

Just converted a Dell 1545 from Vista x32 to LL 2.4 x32. Awesome result. Everything went smoothly. I had to install the Broadcom driver, everything else was stock. Added Wine and a few other progs. The owner is absolutely thrilled with the speed and stability - neither of which Vista had any acquaintance with.

I had struggled to make Vista work, but finally gave up. Not a bad OS, but MS abandoned it a long time ago and went on to "greener" pastures, leaving the field tech to try to clean up its messes.

I also decided I won't be upgrading my own tower to Win10, since I don't want to cede control of my computer to MS' mandatory automatic updates. I'll stick with 7 for the time being, but if it comes to it, I would have no compunction against converting to LL.

Hi paul1149,

Depending on what you do on your tower you could always:
1. Dual boot along with Linux Lite
or
2. Replace Window 7 with Linux Lite and run your Windows 7 in Virtualbox
There are methods to make an "exact" image of your current Windows 7
and run straight away in Virtualbox
Even MS have a tool to create "vhd" images, that you can use with Virtualbox

Just a thought...

Thanks, Wirezfree. I will keep that in mind.

Thanks to all who worked to produce this great distro. I'm becoming a bit of an evangelist!

Hello!

Vista isn't TOO bad, as long as one remembers to also install SP1, SP2, and run Windows Update afterwards.

LL's easier. Faster, too...

It depends on the hardware. I've had Vista machines that were very smooth, and others that had a hard time getting off the ground. But I learned that even with the good setups, the install could crash at any moment, because MS gave up any meaningful support of the OS years ago, wanting (us) to simply forget it ever existed. There was nothing wrong with the OS that couldn't be dealt with, it was a financial and marketing decision, and one that left the field tech and ultimately the owner holding the bag.

LL is faster and better though, no question. Honestly, my one hangup is marketing. I'm afraid that converting to Linux will limit the marketability of my laptops. Otherwise I would simply wipe all XP and Vista machines and install LL first thing.

Hello!

Sadly, since you're reselling these laptops, you'll more or less have to install Windows on them. However, you might be able to buy a quantity of Win 7 Professional OEMs at a good price somewhere...

Margins are too low to afford buying a new OS in almost all cases, unfortunately. But thanks. Smile
