linux mounts what it wants, when it wants - tigertye - 06-10-2015
my linux is mounting my dvd drive without me telling it to. doesn't happen every time i use linux but most. usually a half hour or so after boot. it recently started mounting one of my hd partitions too. what's up with this?
i use linux for web access as it is safer than the windows that i require for my games. this self mounting is kind of defeating the purpose if i am not at my desk to see it happen....

Hello tigertye, welcome to the Forums.
Is there anything in the DVD drive? Secondly, on the HD partition that is self-mounting, what is the filesystem used, and do you know the permissions on the drive? Did you mount the HD drive during or after the installation?

Yes I keep my game disk in the drive since I tend to play every day. Why risk scratching my disk with constantly removing it
That's pretty much the only reason I have a dvd drive other than for doing installations lol.I'm pretty sure all my partitions are NTFS as I am forced to use win 7 for my games. So far it has mounted 3 diff partitions on diff days.
Permissions? I don't know what you mean by this question.
I mount any/all partitions on the HD as needed then unmount when I am done accessing them.
In case you can't tell I am seriously new to the whole linux experience so forgive me if I don't always understand what you are asking/saying. My hubby got me into this and he has no idea why the drives are doing the mount thing.

Currently cd/dvd will auto mounted as there is a disk in the drive. As for the ntfs mounts it may show the disk(dev) even if they are not truly mounted.
So if I have 2 disks with 4 ntfs formated partitions on linux lite you will see all 4 ntfs (dev) as mount locations.
Even if you can not access them until that are actively mounted they may show up on the desktop.
Fixing the CD/DVD Auto Mount
Under Settings>Removable Drives and Media
You can disable any settings related to the cd/dvd.
If this does not solve the cd/dvd issue then there are advanced steps to take to fix the issue.

The dvd does not mount every boot, only about 70% of the time. There is always a disk in that drive. What you say about the ntfs drives makes no sense to me. Of course they are shown on the desktop as mount locations. That does not mean they are mounted however. When I say they autonomously mount I mean I get the lil popup that says "drive mounted" and then a window opens up giving me a dir of the dvd or hd partition that it just mounted. Again, this does not happen at every boot but it does happen often enough that it is very annoying.
Under Settings>Removable Drives and Media
I see nothing there that pertains to an automount command for the dvd. the only thing I see that is for the dvd is "Burn a cd or dvd when a blank disc is inserted" which does not apply in this case. hmm there is also a place for autoplay of audio cd or video cd/dvd. The disc I keep in the drive is neither.

I showed my hubby this thread when he got home and he obviously understood what you were saying better than I did. He instructed me to uncheck the 3 boxes in the Removable Drives and Media section. I have done so. Thank you for the info. I hope this fixes the unwanted mountings.

Deselecting all options in the Settings>Removable Drives and Media>removable storage section will eliminate the the prompt.
