Request - Core Linux Lite - mpig - 12-18-2014

What i do after install Linux Lite (and also other Linux distros):
  • Uninstall apps that i don't need (i always uninstall Libreoffice, Gimp)
  • Replace default apps (VLC with SMPlayer, Thunderbird with Claws)
  • Upgrade apps
I love LL more if provide XFCE with minimal apps. No Libreoffice, music player, video player. The good for minimalist:
  • smaller ISO
  • faster install time
  • download only once, because i will have the latest apps
  • i can have OS as i like
What do you guys think?

Re: Request - Core Linux Lite - altman - 12-18-2014

It s not a bad idea . I think it should fit a cd/rw also . But easier said than done .

One can add apps needed/wanted after install .

Foods for thought .

Re: Request - Core Linux Lite - Monkeyman - 12-19-2014

Ya'll realize that Jerry JUST released the newest version of LL, right?  I don't see yet another new version any time in the near future.  v 2.0 fits on a CD.  Linux Lite was meant as an easy transition to Linux.  Because of that, it HAS to include some basic programs that can easily replace major apps that you would normally find in Windows (like Libreoffice for Word, Gimp for Photoshop, etc).  The biggest name in open source email is Tbird which is why it's included.  I've never heard of Claw.  VLC plays just about everything so, even if it's not your player of choice, it's the best for the masses.

Monkeyman is right. We won't be producing any other version of LL. LL is specifically targeted at Windows users, therefore it must be similar in as many ways as possible, of course that is a constant work in progress Smile

One can add / remove as one s want , easy as that , it s always what I m doing .

Hello!

I see your point. The more you install on a system, the slower it becomes. However, a stripped-down version of LL could be quite confusing to a lot of people.

One can always strip out what they don't want there after installation...

True, it's easy to add/remove apps. Especially using 'Install Additional Software'. I'm ex-windows user. I don't see other ex-windows will find difficulties to add/remove apps.

But, here in Indonesia, the internet still expensive and speed is not so fast. If LL size can be more compact, it will save lot of my internet dan time. Less to download ISO, no need to uninstall then install, upgrade only apps that i use.

Nope. My laptop still responsive with default LL. After i uninstalled some apps, there was no difffences. RAM 512 MB with Intel M 430 processor.

My point is with more compact LL, it will save (my) internet dan time.

You must not be aware of a Ubuntu Minimal Iso Disk I take it?
I did a 14.04 LTS Icewm install on one of my rigs.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD

I had the choice of installing xfce, lxde, or whatever. My druthers was to go with Icewm. I think I'll throw a Fluxbox install on it also.
When I feel better.

You can copy and paste the Linux Lite xources list into the Ubuntu Minimal Install. Then install what you want to your own preferences. Then https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization

Hello!

Given that LL is so heavily modified, is this even POSSIBLE?

Not exactly probably. Certain custom scripts may be missing. But. It sounds easier to me than removing things.
