[SOLVED] Is Changing CPU's Under Linux Okay? - Wirezfree - 12-18-2014
In an effort to try and reduce Hardware I want to do some CPU/Memory re-distribution.
I know changing memory is not an issue, But what about changing CPU's.?
Under windows changing CPU usually involved re-registering Windows and some times driver/chipset updates.
What happens under Linux,?
Is there anything I need to take of, besides the make sure I have a full backup.
or is it a re-install.?

Nope -- no worries like that with Linux.
Only thing need to be sure of is that you don't have the system setup with proprietary graphics drivers that may not be compatible with new system. If you do, just purge the drivers first -- then make the switch and (if applicable) install drivers for the new system.

Wonder if you backup your whole system with SystemBack , you ll have everything back in .

No special graphics, just the on-board/built-in Intel Graphics
Just trying to juggle parts to make 2 better PC's from 3.
Fortunately they are all 1150 Socket type, so can move CPU's

Yes, systemback is good for fullback,
and also the the restore points.
I've not fully tested the create "Live"
option to put on another machine yet.

I have one Tower PC that's I have had about 12 years it was my main PC that was very tuned/clean it just purred.
At the time it was a state of the art 1.4GHz Celeron with 512MB of 800Mhz Ram, I did upgrade to 1GB after a while.
But over the past few years I have had impulses to build very small mini-itx's
I have found that they get a bit on the warm side when pushed hard.
They are all Intel, ones got a 82 Watt device, and 2 with 65W devices.
So I have just ordered a higher spec 45 Watt CPU for the better machine
and I'm going to move the CPU's around, and put the new CPU in the best
machine, and take the 82 Watt device out of service.

It s the only backup system that works for me , evry other apps that I tried never worked properly . & I use XFBurn for iso burning , another favs of mine .

I like to play the game "OS hot potato" with hard drives and VM's. I have only had one time that linux failed at that was because I tried to put a 64 bit VM on a 32 bit host.

Hi,
Yes, I think I did that once.
You can create new 64 bit vm's on 32bit host from scratch,
but there are a lot of pre-requisites/caveats etc...
