Possible graphics or monitor problem? - KimG - 12-11-2014
Not exactly sure what the problem is here. I'm on a Dell Dimension 2100. A couple months back I installed Lubuntu 14.04, everything looked and ran fine. Did all of my updates, after rebooting I was faced with a black screen of death. So, I researched before doing a reinstall. I found out a bug report had been filed in Lubuntu saying that the latest Xorg update was possibly causing BSOD on machines with an i810 or i915 chip. I have an i810 in this Dell. So, I reinstalled Lu, checked for updates, unchecked the two updates showing for X.org. When I rebooted everything was fine. There has been no update to the bug that was filed so taking a chance I once again took the X.org updates and BOOM! BSOD! So, I decided to look for another distro and see if I could avoid this, not knowing LL also uses xorg. I am very limited at the moment on my choices as I only have a cd drive in this machine right now. So, I installed LL 2.0 and it's awesome, fast, beautiful til I ran the system update BOOM! BSOD again! I did not know the updates were going to run the way they did and just install as opposed to in Lu, you can pick and choose first. So, I've just done a fresh reinstall, no updates and ran a system report. I am noticing that under display it says unclaimed. Is something not picking up my monitor? I have a Samsung Syncmaster 930B hooked up. gold-finger, you had asked for my partition layout. I will add that below. (I hope ) Model: ATA ST340823A (scsi)

Re: Possible graphics or monitor problem? - KimG - 12-11-2014
Hmm, thought I got that system report in a block thingy, sorry about that. I forgot to add that when I boot up I get the normal blue grub then it goes to a black screen with white garbled stuff in the center then proceeds to boot fine from there.

Hi KimG,
I'm sure somebody will come along on the technical issue...
If you want to edit your first post,
and put a Code:
at the beginning of the Sys Report, and at the end of it a ...
It should end up in a scrolly block "thingy"...

Re: Possible graphics or monitor problem? - KimG - 12-11-2014
I thought maybe I could edit it but I am not sure how to put it in one of those blue blocks. It showed that way when I previewed it though. I will try what you said, if I'm reading it right.

Think I got it this time! 3rd times a charm!

KimG,
Hmmm. This could be a tough one. Not really an expert on graphics problems, so hopefully others chime in here too.
Do you happen to have the link to the bug report for us to look over? I tried doing a search for it, but couldn't find it.
Just so I understand, as of right now you have re-installed LL and are using it without doing updates yet. Correct?
From your output, looks like root partition is /dev/sda7 and there's another partition that I'm guessing is supposed to be for /home at /dev/sda6. Is sda6 supposed to be for /home, or is that something else? Reason I ask is because the output does not show that partition mounted at the time you ran the report. Assuming you ran it from within the installed system, sda6 should be mounted on bootup if it's your /home partition.
Post back answering what you meant that sda6 partition to be along with link to the bug report. Also, open file manager to your home directory. Do you see all the normal home folders (Documents, Downloads, etc.)? Save a test file to Documents. Then open a terminal and post back with the output of these two commands:
Code: lsblk
cat /etc/fstab
I have a feeling that your current home directory is within the root partition and that you may have forgotten to set the separate /home partition during last installation.

I'm not sure what that means. Do you have the monitor hooked-up using a KVM switch or an adaptor of some sort?

Not entirely sure if that's a problem or not. Do you have computer set so that you must login, or did you set it to autologin? Do you see the LL logo splash screen at some point after the "black screen with white garbled stuff"?
Re: Possible graphics or monitor problem? - KimG - 12-11-2014
Getting it booted up for you, in the mean time root is sda 6 and home is sda 7. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1389904 is the link to the bug report. I'll be on the Dell in a second!
Re: Possible graphics or monitor problem? - KimG - 12-11-2014
O.K., yes, fresh install, no updates done yet. Yes, I see everything fine, everything is here. Only that boot up garbage, no splash screen ever then I'm on the desktop. Everything works fine. Code: kim@kim-DIM2100:~$ lsblk
