Software for installing and running LL2 "live" from a USB pendrive? - m654321 - 10-14-2014
What software do you recommend I use to install LL2 onto a USB pen drive, so that I can run it “live” from a pendrive, when plugged into an Windows 7 PC?

Check the Help Manual under Install Guide, there are a couple of options there.

If you want to run it "in" Windows - then you'll probably need a virtual machine like VirtualBox or VMWare. With one of those you could boot from the downloaded ISO and play, or even install from the booted ISO into a virtual hard drive. (Remember, with the ISO boot you can't save any changes between boots.)
Personally, I like to run from a USB device so from my Windows box installed LinuxLite 2 to a USB stick via:
- download LinxuLite ISO
- download and run YUMI (no install needed) from pendrivelinux.com
- select my USB device (if USB is already FAT32 it won't reformat, just use what space is available without affecting existing files!)
- select LinuxLite from the list of Distros (if not listed, select "Other SYSLINUX based distro" from the bottom of the list)
- browse to the ISO & let YUMI do it's thing
Then I:
- booted to the USB stick
- selected "Other SYSLINUX based distro" from the YUMI menu
- selected LinuxLite
- let the awesomeness load!
Once LinuxLite has loaded I'm able to to confirm it works with my hardware (wifi, printer, etc.) at which point I plug in a SECOND USB device and just use the "Install It" icon from the LinuxLite desktop.
If fact, I'm doing it RIGHT NOW - I got board waiting for LinuxLite to install to me USB 3 device so I thought I'd browse the forums and bumped into your post. :-)
Please keep in mind that if you use this method, when running "Install It" from the LinuxLite desktop be sure to confirm you have the right device selected! In my case I have a single HDD (listed as "sda"), my boot USB device (not listed since it's in use, but otherwise would have been "sdb") and my "destination" USB device (listed as "sdc"). So I just told it to installed to SDC.
Oh - and if you're going to "do something else" (custom partitions and all) I like to:
- make the FIRST partition a small FAT32 (so when the USB device goes in a Windows machine it doesn't prompt me to format the device! (I usually have a label or text file on that partition saying this is a Linux drive - please don't repartition it)
- make sure one partition is mounted as "/" (aka root), likely formated as ext4
- if you want a swap partition, make sure to "format" it as "Swap Partition" (or something like that)
- lastly, at the bottom of the partition window is a 'pulldown' to choose where to put the boot info BE SURE TO SELECT YOUR DEVICE! (for me "sdc") - otherwise you may end up having your "boot menu" put on the HDD and NOT the USB (which is OK if that's what you want, but it's probably not)
And finally, the usual disclaimers - I have no idea what I'm doing and my memory is poor, so if something doesn't work as expected (or something else gets broken) then be happy that you've just had a learning experience and you're now free to try again without having to worry about that issue. :-)

Hi,
I use UNetbootin,
It's available for Windows & Linux(in Synaptic)
I have lost count of the number of USB Boot sticks I have created,
and never had a single failure.(touch wood)

Forgot,
Will also download certain ISO's as part of the create process,
or like I do, just use an existing(other) ISO previously downloaded.
