Re: Hi all... - RoverDog - 05-09-2017 The family is growing... ;D Re: Hi all... - ralphy - 05-09-2017 That picture is epic so cool! I will get very drunk waiting for the eeePc 701 to boot. Takes 11 minutes to get to start the desktop... About 15 minutes to show the welcome screen! Something is not right. It boots the old Mandriva 2010.2 in less than 2 minutes into KDE3. Tried 2 different USB ports just in case the 1 was stuck at USB 1.1. No change. One of the mods that I have done to the 701 was soldering a 64gb stick to the motherboard to an unused USB port. So it boots via the 4GB on board SSD and /home is mounted to the 64GB stick. Don't know if it somehow interferes with the LL starting up? I installed Mandrake way back from a DVD attached via USB. It was slow but not that slow. Just took the plunge and started the install... :o Going OK. Got interesting guessing where the OK button is while setting up the partitions since the screen is too small. Afterwards I connected an external screen, much easier now Now going much quicker than booting... [/quote] Hi RiverDog - Suggest you try LL2.8 installed to SDHC in the 701 card reader, preferably a good class 10 card. My 701 boots LL2.8 from a 32GB class 10 SDHC in 65 seconds from switch on to operational with wifi connected. Some memory sticks are notoriously slow as I'm sure you know. Sometimes you can drag a window up/down the small screen using Alt+left-mouse-button combo and moving the mouse. That usually enables finding hidden buttons. Re: Hi all... - RoverDog - 05-09-2017 Thanks justme2. After installation bootup from the internal 4GB SSD is quite a bit faster, probably around a minute. Quite acceptable and comparable to the Mandriva KDE3 that was on there previously. But I ran into another "noob here" problem. I left the partitions the the same as for the previous installation. The 4GB SSD allocated to 3.5GB root & .5GB swap and the built in 64GB memory stick to /home. Ran out of disk space on root as soon as I tried to update the system... Since it's got 2GB RAM, I will 1st get rid of the swap and move something else less used off to the 64GB stick. Preferably some mount that will not affect bootup times too much. Any ideas on this scheme very welcome Thanks ralphy, going from 7 inch then 12 inch (x2), to 14 inch and then to a 42 inch screen! Re: Hi all... - RoverDog - 05-11-2017 ;D Finally posting from the Asus 701... Still a few issues with booting but I found the problem. During install the installer saw the 64GB on board stick as /dev/sdd... but once the 8GB installer stick was removed, it changed the 64GB stick to /dev/sdb.... Boot up times out after 10 minutes but it finally finds and mount the partitions correctly on the 64GB stick. Easy fix. More impressive is that Firefox 44 loads in under 15 seconds on a 900Mhz Celeron.... ;D ;D ;D |
