Re: Linux Lite 2.8 Suggestion Thread - Wirezfree - 11-23-2015

Not sure how much effort & technical changes and I believe there is a licence/key required?, that's for Jerry
But on an ethical standpoint, If LL was to be made UEFI capable,
It could be argued that you are basically condoning/supporting the lock-down/lock-out to 3rd party s/w
Hence where I could see it being a moral/ethical dilemma.

Just my thoughts

I understand the ethical standpoint now. But I would hope Linux Lite's ethos of "Our target audience are Windows users. We want to show people that a linux based operating system can: 1. Be simple to use. ..." * would include easy to install.

It would be difficult to find an example of when a convenience has more importance than an ethic.

Re: Linux Lite 2.8 Suggestion Thread - Wirezfree - 11-23-2015

Just to add to this, and I think it's relevant... I have spent hours trying to get LL installed on a new Samsung SM951 for a friends NUC, still no luck in getting it to boot.
I was able to get Win7 installed, by installing it to a regular drive, installing 2 MS hotfixes, and then cloning it to the SM951.
I suspect this is to cater for the millions of business users who want to stay on Win7, businesses generally image from a "Gold Master" which they can have added the hotfixes to.

So how is this relevant..??
I have just found this statement for the SM951:
Quote:The UEFI drivers for this M.2 PCIE SSD are built onto it and must be read/loaded into your UEFI BIOS first

So basically to use this Hardware you must be using a "UEFI" compliant BIOS, and OS.
They are "forcing" me(my friend) to take a path that I would not want to go down, out of principal.
So unless there is an equivalent "Linux Hotfix"
My friends got a choice, Go down the UEFI path, or get a lower spec M.2 SATA drive.

Anyway, hope this makes sense...

Re: Linux Lite 2.8 Suggestion Thread - Duckeenie - 11-23-2015

@Jerry

I don't dual boot so it doesn't really affect me at this time but wouldn't it be technically/ethically possible to make UEFI installer an option, you know, like we have for codecs? This way your ethics remain intact?

Re: Linux Lite 2.8 Suggestion Thread - Valtam - 11-23-2015

@Duckeenie, let me make an analogy. That would be like giving a crack addict a voucher for a gram of crack, you're not actually giving him the crack, but your giving him a way to get it Smile

Re: Linux Lite 2.8 Suggestion Thread - Valtam - 11-23-2015

I think I need to summarize here because it seems some folk aren't getting it. I've made it known publicly (several times) that I will look at UEFI in Series 3, not sooner. So it's not completely ruled out, one thing about technology is one must be willing to be flexible around a set of circumstances.

Now let's get back on course here and keep the 2.8 suggestions coming. Thank you all for your input on this topic thus far Smile

Not really a fair analogy Jerry because any balanced person would agree that crack is bad news. The UEFI thing is a question of perspective.

Fair enough!  8)

@Coastie... and anyone else  ;D
If looking for some "info" I found http://www.uefi.org/ has some decent on the "thought" behind it..
I don't much about UEFI myself (well I can spell it  ;D), it does look like it could be a PIA  :-X .. Check out some of the presentations under education... Oh and at least Linux and Open Source is "mentioned"....
