Libre Office - Instability - newtusmaximus - 09-30-2015

Has anyone recently noticed instability in Libre Office - particularly regarding writer and calc.  Since recent updates I have found that s  when saving documents spreadsheets they do not open without going through a recovery process - and even then several  come up as a non recoverable file.  Only just started having problems in the last few days.  I have been using libre office as my main office workhorse for many years both on Windows and on LL without problems.

Just to be sure I have completely deleted libre office , using synaptic.  Shut down the computer, rebooted some minutes later and then reloaded libre office from synaptic , installed updates to be sure all is current etc.  Same issue.

Thanks

One thing you can try is renaming ~/.config/libreoffice to ~/.config/libreoffice.old

Then log out and log back in. Then restart everything in libreoffice to see if bugs still persist or not.

Re: Libre Office - Instability - Wirezfree - 09-30-2015

Is it related to this..??
This is an old thread,
but with some recent additions at the end.

Re: Libre Office - Instability - newtusmaximus - 09-30-2015

Tks to all.  It does appear related to the  Wiresfree post.  I have not had this problem before, I started on Libre Office when it broke free from Open Office stable,  So why now??    If files have started becoming corrupted during saving - or in one case saved but "lost" nowhere to be found on the HDD this undermines my confidence in the package.    Will persevere for the moment but won't like the uncertainty  of when/if the problem will recur.

the mysteries of software...mmm
Have you got LO auto-backup or auto-save options set..??

I deleted some picture files in my early days...
I found a recovery program called Foremost
It recovered them all, it's in Synaptic.

Re: Libre Office - Instability LONG - newtusmaximus - 09-30-2015

LO is at the default setting - whatever they are. . It so happens, coincidence or not?, that Thunderbird is reporting it is crashing. This is periodic. I run updates every couple of days.
The desktop has 3GB Ram, and there is 25gb free on the HDD. The PC is cool and relatively dust free inside -. Can't see any loose connections etc. so presume hardware is OK. The whole set-up monitor / pc / router - LAN etc. all surge/spike voltage protected. No mobile phones nearby - cordless digital phone is nearby but that has been the case for years. No new hardware added/attached.
I reported elsewhere a problem that occurred a few days ( weeks?) after the upgrade to 2.6 from 2.4 i.e. lost desktop background & icons but task bar along bottom visible/functional - otherwise all at that time appeared to be functioning OK.

Not sure whether these recent foibles are an indication of " problem creep" / escalation.
Weird, and staring to get annoying. The reason for switching to LL was that it was rock solid - basic and good enough for SOHO .
I am loathe to back up and reload LL 2.6 afresh just in case a freak mix of additional add-ons via synaptic and other PPAs has just triggered an incompatibility.
Just a thought - a few days ago I downloaded a script  ( arrow.scm ?) from the GIMP forum which enables arrows to be created on pictures etc. - used for  reports etc.    However  I removed GIMP at the same time as LO and restored GIMP 2.8 again, but this time without adding the script.  The script is still  in the download fold presumably "inactive"
I have ( updated) Clamav/clamtk the pc Home folder last night and only one possible threat was identified. This was a encrypted pdf  received by email which was from a known source/scanner . The email was downloaded via webmail. /

Over to you guruss Smile

Re: Libre Office - Instability - Valtam - 10-01-2015

Go into Install/Remove Software. Click Reload and then Mark All Upgrades, Apply. There is a newer build there.

Re: Libre Office - Instability - newtusmaximus - 10-01-2015

Tks Jerry.
Clarification please - for what is the newer version LO or LL?
Followed instructions -RELOAD - error box came up with "  "W: GPG error: http://extras.ubuntu.com trusty Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 16126D3A3E5C1192"
Pressed close . Then MARK ALL UPDATES - 1 itme came up ( not sure to which it appled hence question above)  Marked  and Applied - Quick down load - not a lot of data .
Rebooted computer from shut down - not restart -.  - Still desktop blacking out as described above.  Will test LO again thoroughly tomorrow -  but build from " Help" still shows 5.022 which is what I was using when the problem with LO started 29/09
Re Playing with monitor settings - black desktop - have tried altering display/monitor settings - resolution and  background etc in tern  At each stage no change re  issue.

Re: Libre Office - Instability - Valtam - 10-01-2015

I see no reference to 'desktop blacking out' in your initial post. My post is regarding LibreOffice only.

Re: Libre Office - Instability - newtusmaximus - 10-01-2015

Jerry , stand corrected Smile Mixed topics as I thought that they were possibly interconnected i.e instability  with the upgrade might be triggering various symptoms with programs.
Will test through LO over the next few days and report back.

Not sure what the significanc if any of the error message reported above was to the  effect of the instructions you gave??

Re screen problem - have  found a work round and will report on that original posting . Smile so progress
